Penshurst road tragedy

TWO women are dead after a horror head-on collision on the Hamilton Highway near Penshurst.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, which happened on the Hamilton Highway about 5.20pm Saturday.

Sergeant Peter Freeman, of Hamilton police, said a 60-year-old woman from the Geelong area, the sole occupant of one of the vehicles, had died at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 35-year-old woman from Dale's Creek, near Ballan, was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with head injuries and multiple fractures.

But he said she had later died.

The woman had been travelling east with her three-year-old daughter and two dogs.

Sergeant Freeman said the young girl had been taken to Hamilton hospital with minor injuries.

He revealed the 60-year-old woman's husband was travelling behind in a second vehicle.

The collision happened about three kilometres north of Penshurst.
