POLICE are seeking witnesses after a Coleraine man was found dead in a residential street early this morning.
Hamilton Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrived to investigate after the 56-year-old's body was discovered by a passer-by at the intersection of McLeod and Winter streets just before 6.30am.
Detectives said, at this stage, the cause of death was not known and they would now await the results of a post mortem.
A crime scene was established at the intersection while police attended to the scene where the man's body lay covered on a footpath in front of a house.
A second crime scene was also cordoned off in Whyte Street, about 400 metres to the north-west where more evidence was discovered on a grass area in front of a fertiliser depot.
It is understood the two sites were linked by a trail of blood.
Coleraine residents have been left shocked by the incident.
Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have been seen the man in the vicinity of the intersection prior to his discovery.
They are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au
