Man critical after Warrnambool assault

WARRNAMBOOL police are urgently seeking witnesses to an assault which has left a 45-year-old Warrnambool man with life threatening injuries.

Detective Senior Constable Richard Hughes, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said an ambulance was called after a resident noticed a man lying on the road unconscious near the intersection of Bates Road and Verdon Street at about 9.15pm Saturday.

He said it was clear the man was seriously injured. The victim was transported by ambulance to the Warrnambool Base Hospital before being flown by air ambulance to Melbourne's The Alfred Hospital where he is in a critical condition with head injuries.

Detective Senior Constable Hughes said any witnesses or anyone who has information about the assault is requested to contact the Warrnambool police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
