THE powerful combination of celebrity and social media has brought 20,000 new readers to The Standard's website this week, thanks to a Twitter plug from British comedian and actor Ricky Gervais.
The co-creator and star of The Office yesterday tweeted a site link to a review for his latest TV series Derek, written by Sydney Morning Herald's Michael Idato.
By chance The Standard's version of Idatos' article was the link Gervais seemed to find on Google, directing many of his 4.4 million Twitter followers to The Standard.
Just under 24 hours later the article has been viewed by more than 20,000 people across the world, making it our fourth most popular online story on record.
By comparison The Standard's next most popular article of the week had just over 900 clicks in the same time frame.
