CFA issues lightning alert

THE Country Fire Authority released an alert for residents across the south-west concerning fires sparked by lightning strikes.

Country Fire Authority region five operations manager Steve Giddens said there had been 13 fires reported this morning as a slow moving low pressure weather front moved across the south-west.

He said fires had been started at Balmoral and were now being reported from as far east as the Mortlake district as the front pushed across.

"We're actually just putting out an advice for all the south-west residents that we are experiencing numerous lightning strikes which have and may result in fires.

Fortunately so far those fires have been small and they have been able to be contained," he said.

"We started getting reports from Balmoral and they're now through to the Hexham/Mortlake area. We are experiencing numerous lightning strikesas the front is moving through. The front is slow moving and appears to contain little rain."

Mr Giddens said residents needed to be aware of the fire damage and report any fire activity.

"We've had those 13 reports so far but we're receiving reports all the time. It's a very fluid situation. We've also had a hit in the Grampians and we'll be closely following that situation," he said.
