THERE was little to suggest that tragedy was moments away as a yacht left Port Campbell on Thursday night.
Tourists and holidaymakers who had sat by the foreshore for dinner or to watch the sunset, looked on as police and surf lifesavers pulled the yacht back to shore, which moments before had stopped to refuel at the shipwreck coast port.
The two men on board had been travelling from Adelaide to Melbourne and were only docked a short time.
Just after 6.20pm surf lifesavers found the unconscious 50-year-old face down in the ocean.
Paramedics spent a long time trying to revive him on the dock as night approached.
Water Police have spent the past few days investigating the mishap and have prepared a report for the coroner.
A police spokeswoman said the man was overcome by a wave as the vessel left the bay.
His friend managed to throw him a line, but the man drifted in and out of consciousness and slipped away.
“We are treating the death as accidental, there are no suspicious circumstances,” the spokeswoman said.
