WEST Warrnambool skipper Ben Dobson might have missed out on a chance to play in the grand final but he was named captain of The Standard’s Warrnambool and District Cricket Association team of the year.
The dual cricketer of the year award winner received the honour at the association’s presentation night in Warrnambool on Wednesday.
With division one sides adopting 12-player teams this season for the first time, the team of the year also included a non-batting bowler.
The squad, chosen on form, included players from nine clubs, with Dobson’s minor premier West having two representatives with bowling all-rounder Simon Johnson the other.
Grand finalist Merrivale also had two players, opening batsman Josh Stapleton and English import Will Chapples while Russells Creek also had two, cricketer of the year award winner Jayaweera Bandara and paceman Ben Boyd.
For the first time, the team included a volunteer of the year, with West stalwart Gay Johnson receiving the honour.
Another new initiative included an umpire of the year, which was based on votes by captains. The award went to Steve Johnson.
