Charges over bag thefts in Portland

A PORTLAND woman wanted in a number of states has been remanded in custody after allegedly stealing handbags in Portland on Wednesday.

Heidi Brianna Harris, 35, of Hurd Street, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court yesterday charged with two counts of shop theft.

She did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until a further hearing in Melbourne Magistrates Court next Monday.

Police allege that at 2.30pm on Wednesday Ms Harris went to Pauline’s Absolutely Fabulous Accessories in Percy Street and removed a $50 handbag from the front of the store.

A witness reported the theft to a staff member who confronted Ms Harris out the front of the nearby ANZ Bank.

About 15 minutes later a witness observed Ms Harris steal another handbag from Lineker Leather in Bentinck Street. When police arrived Ms Harris still had the handbag and she was arrested. Police allege that Ms Harris made admissions to the thefts.
