Police charge Warrnambool home intruder

A WOMAN has discovered an intruder in her Warrnambool home after watering the garden.

Detective Senior Constable Richard Hughes, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said an 18-year-old Warrnambool man had been charged and bailed to appear in court after the confrontation about 8pm Saturday.

Detective Senior Constable Hughes said the woman was watering the garden at her Hoddle Street home when the man was alleged to have snuck in a door and stole her handbag.

“She has walked in her back door and been confronted by the man,” he said.

“The woman got a fright. She was a bit traumatised.

‘‘The alleged offender flees, grabs the cash out of the purse and dumps the purse and credit cards in Crawley Street.”

Detective Senior Constable Hughes said police officers attended after the woman called 000.

“He was arrested nearby in possession of the $286 cash which was stolen,” Detective Senior Constable Hughes said.

“We recovered the purse and the lady’s personal cards from a drain in Crawley Street.

“The man made admissions to the offending during an interview with police before being charged and bailed to appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on  March 26.

“The offending was purely opportunistic.

“He sees her watering her garden, walks in the back door and his explanation is that he’s just desperate to buy drugs.”
