Soda bomb scare

Wollaston Road residents are on alert after a small bomb exploded in a property’s letterbox and caused three small fires.

A resident, who did not wish to be named, said the incident happened last Saturday night about 11.30pm in the iconic letterbox formed in the shape of a running man.

She said the initial explosion sounded like a car accident and a Warrnambool State Emergency Service official who was visiting her house went to investigate.

“We thought another car had come off the road and gone into the paddock,” she said. “You could see smoke and a car’s headlights.

“We called 000 and one of us grabbed a fire extinguisher because you could see lots of smoke.

“It all happened very close to dry grass so there was the potential for it to be far worse.”

The resident said a soda bomb had been placed in the letterbox and ignited, which caused the small explosion.

“Apparently there was another incident at Woodford soon after.

“A fire truck arrived and made sure everything was safe,” she said.
