Old Warrnambool oaks cut for safety

WARRNAMBOOL City Council says it is unfortunate that historic oak trees were pruned in Woodford.

A Woodford resident contacted The Standard concerned by the pruning of the trees which make up the Avenue of Honour.

On Thursday, Powercor contractors pruned a number of trees on Bridge Road.

“It’s unfortunate that a number of lovely, historic oak trees at Woodford are situated close to powerlines and adjacent to a high risk bushfire area,” Warrnambool City manager of infrastructure services Glenn Reddick said.

“Because of this, the contractor and Powercor made a decision that in the interests of safety, the trees required pruning.

“Council was advised of this decision by the contractor.”

The pruning was done to comply with the Electricity Safety Act which requires that vegetation must be kept clear of powerlines.
