Parenting experts visit

INTERNATIONALLY respected parenting experts William Sears and Nils Bergman will give a public talk in Warrnambool this month.

They are among a range of eminent speakers for the Turning the Tide Birth and Breastfeeding national conference for health professionals at the Lighthouse Theatre from February 22-24.

Dr Sears is a world-renowned paediatrician and author of 41 books on parenting and family health.

Based in the United States where he is a frequent guest on television talk shows, he is widely known as a guru of attachment parenting, described as a “natural and instinctive style of parenting”.

Dr Bergman, from South Africa, is an advocate of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), which encourages skin-to-skin contact between mothers and their babies to help babies’ neurodevelopment.

He has given keynote talks on KMC at conferences throughout the world.

The two will speak at the Building Strong Connections with Your Child, Now & Into the Future event at the Whalers Hotel function room from 2pm on Saturday, February 23.

Proceeds from the talk and the national conference will go towards the establishment of a Warrnambool breastfeeding centre.

Conference spokeswoman and lactation consultant Barbara Glare, of Panmure, said about 300 health professionals from throughout Australia had so far booked for the three-day conference.

Ms Glare said the proposed centre would be an information and support resource for parents and health professionals to encourage breastfeeding.

Bookings for the talk by Dr Sears and Dr Bergman can be made to 0439 523 401 or to sedodson@bigpond.com
