Teen again licks at heels of master in Warrnambool summer series

RUNNERS Clinton Hall and Tom Hynes made it a one-two finish for the third time in the Warrnambool Athletics Club summer series on Wednesday night.

The experienced Hall edged out teenage rising star Hynes by two seconds in the fourth and final 2013 summer series run.

Hall clocked 14 minutes and 49 seconds, with Hynes (14.51) close behind.

The pair fought it out for honours in the final three races, after Kris McCartney beat Hall in the opening run.

Hall, 34, was one second better than Hynes, 15, in race two and had a three-second edge in round three.

“He is going all right, the young lad,” Hall said.

“He is young and not carrying much weight. He’s got a good running build and talent.

“He is a good kid and I have been doing a bit of track work with him.”

Hall said it was an intriguing battle.

“There were a few times when I thought he was going to get me but I just dug deep,” he said.

“It won’t be long (before he beats me). He is only a couple of races away.”

The summer series proved popular with locals and visitors alike.

Hall said about 200 people ran the 4.6-kilometre Flagstaff Hill course every Wednesday night over the past four weeks.

He said it was a “good money-spinner” for the athletics club.

“They get campers there and even last night with the campers gone they got 190 people,” he said. “Running is popular at the moment.”

Alison Wilson won the women’s section on Wednesday, clocking a time of 17.36.
