The Californian claimed first-night honours of the Lucas Oil Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic with a brilliant move around the outside of race-leader Mount Gambier's Steven Lines in turn two on the final lap.
Lines, who had led for all 24 laps and one corner, was baulked by former Classic champion Trevor Green as he attempted to lap the veteran. That gave Kaeding a small opportunity and he nailed the pass.
While Kaeding celebrated, Lines was left shattered. But the young Australian star who won the Classic in 2011, is second-highest points scorer entering tonight's final night of the Classic, just behind Kaeding.
Warrnambool's Darren Mollenoyux was third in the A-main with Warrnambool's Jamie Veal eighth, giving both big chances to qualify for the 40-lap Classic.
Competitors will have two more heat races before the finals get underway tonight.
