Warrnambool College acting assistant principal and Australian Education Union (AEU) representative Steve Clift said the future of a camp by its Year 7 students to Cooriemungle was uncertain because of the teachers’ move to limit their work hours to 38 hours a week.
The ban will affect school camps, during which teachers are on call 24 hours a day.
Mr Clift said if it was decided to cancel the Year 7 outing because of the overtime ban, the school would lose a deposit it had paid for the camp. He said a retreat by the college’s Year 12 students in the second week of the coming term would go ahead.
The fate of camps scheduled by other local schools in the first term is not yet known.
AEU Victorian president Meredith Peace said it had received reports from schools throughout Victoria that camps might be cancelled, while others had postponed them.
Ms Peace said teachers had been forced into taking industrial action because the state government had shown it was incapable of resolving the 17-month dispute with teachers and support staff over a pay increase and conditions.
