Katter to meet with Farmer Power in message of support

LATEST: HIGH profile federal MP Bob Katter will visit Warrnambool tomorrow to deliver a message of support to newly formed lobby group Farmer Power.

Mr Katter will address a rally at the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens from 10am tomorrow morning, after calling organisers last week to convey his support.

Farmer Power spokesman Chris Gleeson said Mr Katter called on Thursday after hearing about the groups inaugural meeting in Noorat last week.

"Bob said he had seen what had been happening and was following the progress," Mr Gleeson told The Standard.

"He makes no secret of his support for Australian farmers and said he wanted to come down and show his support first hand.

"It's a bit of a boost for our cause knowing that our message is being heard in Canberra. A lot of other politicians have been showing their support as well which is very encouraging.

"They have shown their interest and understand where we are coming from and that something needs to change."

Mr Gleeson said the rally had been organised to build on the momentum gained from last weeks inaugural meeting, where 600 people crammed into the Noorat Recreation Reserve function centre.

Mr Gleeson said a tractor drive through the streets may also be organised for after the meeting.

He said tomorrow's meeting would be a chance for local businesses and other community members to throw their support of dairy farmers.

"There are plenty of businesses in Warrnambool that are supported by the Dairy industry. If dairy continues to decline, they will start to feel it and begin to struggle," he said.

"We need these businesses, and members of the community to come and show their support, at the end of the day, this is bigger than just the farmers, this is a fight for the whole community."
