BIG name guests at the Camperdown Cup on Saturday helped make it the town’s most successful track event in recent years.
With about 3000 people in attendance at the Camperdown Turf Club, Collingwood AFL star and Brownlow medallist Dane Swan and the 2012 Face of Country Racing Victoria Alex Hecker turned a lot of heads, while Racing Victoria CEO Bernard Saundry checked out the action.
Camperdown Turf Club president Laurie Hickey said the crowd was up about 600 people on last year, the most he has seen in his 14 years with the club.
“The highlight was Henshaw trained by Mick Cerchi winning the Sungold Milk Camperdown Cup and Dane Swan’s part-owned horse Onya Keithy winning the last race,” Mr Hickey said.
“He (Swan) was very excited and delighted to be at Camperdown and said he hopes to bring another horse down to win again.
“His group got here in a bus, they laughed and joked and added a lot of colour to the day.
“Mobile phones were going off everywhere — every young lady with a Facebook page will have a photo of herself with Dane Swan.
“We had the Face of Country Racing Victoria Alex Hecker here and she is probably appearing on every young male’s Facebook page today.”
Mr Hickey said the fashions on the field were of an exceptional standard and far above previous years.
“It was closer to what you’d find at a city race meeting than a country race meeting," he said.
“The quality of outfits the girls went to the trouble of wearing was outstanding."
“Alex was on hand to judge the fashions for us, as was Camperdown’s greatest netball export Sarah Wall. We had a couple of locally trained horses do well too."
He said the Nifty Wilson Jockey Challenge winner was Jack Hill, the jockey who accrued the most points throughout the day for his performance in each race.
