HIGH octane fumes filled the air at Warrnambool airport at the weekend as dozens of drivers put their foot down on the runway for this year’s off-road drag racing competition.

Air quality wasn’t on the minds of hundreds of spectators who lined the makeshift track to watch about 60 competitors try out the drag in 14 burnout cars and 60 bikes.
Warrnambool and District Drag Racing Association president Tony Frost said a 700-strong burnout-loving crowd came through the gates for yesterday’s smoke-filled event. Keith Hards took out the quick top prize, proving to be the fastest in the three best cars.
It’s the 20th year the club’s wheels have touched the tarmac but, with support for the club on the rise, the hunt is on for a permanent track to call home.
“It’s starting to build and we’re getting quicker and better cars and bikes,” Mr Frost said.
“The club has gone through leaps and bounds and hopefully we’ll soon have our own racetrack.”
