Man to fight assault charges against ex

A WARRNAMBOOL man charged with assaulting a woman has been bailed.

Shaun Chapman, 31, of Lava Street, was taken into custody in November last year after allegedly assaulting a woman for a second time.

Yesterday, Mr Chapman’s defence counsel Matt Senia said the alleged offending involved a former partner.

He said Mr Chapman would contest the charges, which although serious were unlikely to warrant a significant jail term if he was found guilty.

Mr Senia said that while in custody Mr Chapman was being treated for mental health issues.

The prosecution did not oppose bail.

The court heard that on November 8 last year Mr Chapman was charged with intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, making a threat to kill, assault with a weapon and unlawful assault after an alleged incident on November 8.

He was later released on bail.

Then on Saturday, November 17, Mr Chapman was again arrested and charged with breaching an intervention order and unlawful assault.

Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt granted bail on the condition that the accused not contact any witnesses and that he comply with conditions of a family violence order.

The contest hearing will be in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on January 29.
