A Powercor spokesman said the same 1731 customers whose power was cut about 2.30pm on Tuesday were hit by a second outage shortly after 10pm.
The first outage was caused when a cable connected to a power pole in Warrnambool’s central business district was affected by rain.
It forced many stores along Raglan Parade, including many at Gateway Plaza and the Homemaker Centre, to close for the afternoon.
Power was restored to all customers by 4.30pm but the outage overheated and damaged power lines in the network feeding eastern Warrnambool and caused the second blackout, which took until about 1.30am yesterday to rectify.
The Powercor spokesman said a thermal camera would soon be used to check for any more damage to the lines.
