A release from the Southern Grampians Shire Council today said it was possible the smoke build up could continue into next week, depending on wind conditions and further fire activity across the region.
"Bushfire smoke can reduce air quality and may affect people’s health and reduce visibility," the council statement said.
"Children, the elderly, smokers and people with pre-existing illnesses such as heart or lung conditions including asthma are more sensitive to the effects of breathing in smoke and are encouraged to avoid physical activity outdoors, stay indoors with closed windows and doors, switch air-conditioners to recycle or recirculate and those with asthma should follow their asthma plan."
Smoke symptoms include itchy eyes, sore throat, runny nose, coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing.
Any residents experiencing these symptoms should seek medical advice.
The council has also urged drivers to take extra care on the roads as the smoke can impact driver visibility.
