Cemetery thieves leave father to grieve again

THIEVES have dealt a cruel blow to a grieving father who discovered ornaments on his son’s Warrnambool grave had been removed.

Wavell McNaughton, of  Colac, wept yesterday as he spoke about his son Mark, who died in May 2011 from an unexpected heart condition.

He is buried in the Warrnambool lawn cemetery and three weeks ago his father glued a porcelain angel on the headstone to supplement containers of artificial flowers and a solar light.

However, when Mr McNaughton revisited the area yesterday to add more flowers his heart sank when he saw they had all been stolen.

“All I want is for my son to be left in peace,” he said.

“It’s a low act. You’d have to be mentally deranged to do something like this. Mark was my pride and joy and I miss him so much.

“What also hurts is that I had the angel blessed by a priest. I would appeal to whoever took the items to put them back.”

Mr McNaughton said he reported the incident to police who said they would patrol the cemetery area.
