Police are currently searching for the man, who jumped into the water after a dinghy overturned in Lysterfield Lake, near Narre Warren, just before 4pm.
Police have been told two males were thrown into the water in the accident.
The missing man jumped into the water to assist them but got into difficulty and disappeared beneath the water.
The two males who fell into the water safely made it to shore.
