PORTLAND police had to abandon the pursuit of a stolen car early this morning after the chase reached dangerous speeds.
Acting Sergeant Sean Elliott said the pursuit began in Oswald Street in Portland about 3.45am when police tried to intercept a dark-coloured Holden Commodore.
The car, which had a sole male occupant, sped off and failed to stop despite police activating the police vehicle's lights and sirens.
The pursuit proceeded across town to the Henty Highway and headed north to Heathmere before police ended the chase because of the dangerous speeds reached.
Acting Sergeant Elliott said a check of the vehicle's registration number revealed it had been reported stolen.
He asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Portland police.
