The incident occurred at Lonsdale Street, near Swanston Street, just before midnight on December 14. Two women got into a taxi before two men approached and got into an argument with the driver.
Police said the taxi driver then tried to drive away, but one of the men grabbed onto the vehicle's front door as it accelerated and drove west along Lonsdale Street.
The 39-year-old Carlton man was allegedly dragged about 200 metres along the road until he broke free from the moving taxi when it reached Elizabeth Street, suffering severe bruising in the process.
Investigators would like to speak to the two women inside the taxi at the time or anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
