Man killed in Hoddle St collision

A man has been killed after a two-car collision in Richmond, forcing the closure of Hoddle Street between Jika Place and Bridge Road.

Police believe the two cars were travelling south on Hoddle Street when one car drove into the rear the other just before 5.20am.

The rear vehicle is then believed to have lost control and crashed into a tree on the footpath.

In the rear car, the male passenger died at the scene while the male driver suffered critical injuries. He was taken to the Alfred Hospital.

The three male occupants of the second car escaped injury.

Investigators from the Major Collision Investigation Group are investigating.

Hoddle Street remains closed in a south-bound direction.

The road toll for 2012 is 277, compared to 284 for the same time last year.
