DISGRUNTLED south-west residents have taken up the opportunity offered by RMIT University to describe how they were affected by the Telstra communications outage.

Since launching the survey late Friday there have been about 50 online responses plus a number of hard copies have been collected from community centres.
“People seem to be eager to fill in the survey,” RMIT communications project officer Michelle van Loggerenberg told The Standard yesterday.
“We will be attending Telstra forums this week and will be asking councils throughout the region to make survey sheets available.
“Submissions will close on December 31 and we will then compile the information. It’s all free and anonymous.”
RMIT’s regional and rural futures research group based in Hamilton is conducting the investigation into social impacts of the telecommunications outage caused by a fire in the Warrnambool central exchange on November 22.

“We are interested in hearing how this may have affected people, for example, loss of telephone or internet and being unable to access essential services,” Ms van Loggerenberg said.
“As well as the negative effects, there may also have been some positives like more direct communication.”
