For the only time in her life, the number of candles on the Dennington youngster’s cake will not only tally with her birthday — but also the day, month and year.
Her mother Sharon said the numerical significance of this year’s celebration had escaped her attention until recently.
But now it’s the main topic at home, adding to the excitement of the countdown.
“It’s been the big talking point at school,” Ms Grundy said.
“She’s counting down the days.
“She’s been jumping around. She’s pretty excited.”
But the unique coincidence only came about because of Ella’s premature birth.
Doctors had anticipated her arrival on Australia Day, but Ella was born safe and sound six weeks early.
Ms Grundy said the family would make the most of the once-in-a-lifetime event.
“We’re going to have tea with the family down on the Merri River.”
But naturally, it’s the presents the birthday girl is most looking forward to.
And, like a lot of other 12-year-olds, Ella has her heart set on a particular type of gift — One Direction merchandise.
