TELEPHONE connections are continuing to be restored randomly across Warrnambool as repair crews hand-wire links from new switching equipment into a grid of almost 30,000 landlines at the exchange which was disabled on November 22.

Telstra’s regional manager Bill Mundy said properties were being brought back on line as technicians progressed down the racks.
“There could be properties with the service back on while a neighbour still is waiting,” he said.
“It depends on when they were originally wired into the exchange, if there were earlier disconnections and various other factors which determine what switching rack they are connected to.
“We expect the backlog to drop dramatically later in the week when hand-wiring is complete.
“Now there are less than 4700 landlines to be connected in Warrnambool and a bit over 7000 ADSL lines yet to come back on in the city and surrounding district.
“More than 100 technicians have been working around the clock rebuilding the exchange and restoring connections. Next week we’ll be checking how all services are working,” he said.
