Temperatures soar in south-west

TEMPERATURES are already heading quickly towards a scorcher today with Port Fairy hitting 38 degrees and Warrnambool at 37 just after midday. 

Dartmoor has reached 38.5, while Portland and Mortlake were at 36 with Hamilton close behind on 34.7.

Further east on the coast Cape Otway was cool on 21.4 degrees

Many centres in the region are tipped to hit 40 degrees fanned by northerly winds.

Then a cool change with some storms will sweep through bringing cooler weather and showers for the next five days.

Several district swimming pools are staying open  longer tonight and hundreds are heading to local beaches for relief.

Fire brigades are on a high state of alert and have urged farmers and other machinery operators to be cautious.
