Investigators believe that more than one offender may have been involved in the assault of the Hamilton man.
The incident is thought to have occurred between Kenna Avenue and Tyers Street, possibly on or near Bree Road around 1.30am.
It is believed the victim left an address in Kenna Avenue at around 1.15am and he was found by his mother at a Bree Road address about two hours later.
The 22-year-old was taken to the Hamilton Hospital with serious injuries.
