Sizzling sun sets the scene on the courts as Country Week ignites

25 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
TAKING inspiration from the Australian Open, tennis players from across the state are doing their best to imitate their idols on the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club courts this week.

The annual Country Week tournament is on again, with players battling the heat and each other at the Pertobe Road venue.

Action started on Monday and finishes tomorrow. Tournament director Don Higgins said 26 teams from as far as Moe, Melbourne and Horsham were participating in the event.

South-west sides from Portland, Camperdown and Warrnambool have also taken up the challenge. Each team comprises four players.

Last year the four-day program was hampered by flooding rains. This year, players are taking shelter from the sizzling sun.

Higgins said all matches were played in a doubles format.

He said the ages of players ranged from 10 to 60.
