XAVIER Darcy has kicked his way to career-best form.
The Camperdown swimmer contested the Victorian Open Swimming Championships on the weekend, returning home with a staggering five medals.
His strong performances at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in the multi-class section saw him finish the titles with 104 points, making him the fourth-ranked male at the competition. Warrnambool Swimming Club coach Jayson Lamb believed Darcy was in career-best form, which he attributed to a change in technique.
"We changed his kicking program about three months ago. It's more shorter, sharper stuff rather than longer kicks," he said.
"He's been able to finish off his races stronger with his kick."
Darcy, 18, grabbed silver in the 50-metres butterfly, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle, while he claimed bronze in the 100m butterfly.
"He's just come back from representing Victoria at the school sports," Lamb said.
"That was long course, so short-course times are a bit quicker.
"He had a great meet up in Brisbane so I wasn't sure how he was going to back it up but he backed it up superbly. Every time he did was a personal best."
The coach said Darcy was a valued member of the club.
"Everybody loves having him around," he said.
"Next he's got the short-course country championships in August, then in October he goes to Taiwan to represent Australia."
Club president Peter Logan was full of praise for Darcy.
"Last year we finished 10th in the state and this year we finished 11th," he said.
"Xavier virtually single-handedly got all those points for us."
Lamb was rapt with the other WSC members who competed at the championships - Isaac Jones and Tanika Cameron.
Isaac, 15, contested seven events, recording personal bests in each .
He managed a 14th in both the 200m backstroke and 200m butterfly.
Tanika competed in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, with the 14-year-old also having an exceptional campaign after swimming three personal best times.
