CHAMPION swimming clubs don't need flash facilities - just look at Traralgon.
The city scooped the pool at Warrnambool yesterday to take out the Victorian Country Championships for the sixth consecutive year.
Despite having a 25-metre pool to train in, Traralgon staved off competition from larger centres like Geelong.
It was the 10th victory under the tutelage of head coach Brian Ford.
He attributed the win to a dedicated squad of young swimmers.
"They train between eight to 10 times per week, they put in the hard yards," he said.
"You can't be a good swimmer if you don't put in the hours and they do. They do a great job.
"Our under 17s are particularly strong.
"We only have a 25-metre pool to train in and they come down here and can perform strongly in the 50-metre pool, which is a good effort."
Traralgon won the championship by 1149 points. Warrnambool Swimming Club was runner-up on 1402 points.
It won the women's, men's and combined teams sections.
Swan Hill's Kahlia Marsh won the girls' individual score while Andrew O'Connor of Traralgon snared the men's individual score.
Western District Amateur Swimming Association president Trevor Wheaton said Warrnambool Swimming Club, which won the championship in 2004, was edging closer to taking over Traralgon as country champion.
"While the final margin looks like a huge gap it has been closed up a fair bit. Last year Warrnambool was runner-up on about 1000 points, so they're getting back there."
Former Warrnambool swimmer Kellie McMillan, now chief executive officer of Swimming Victoria was pleased with Warrnambool hosting the championship.
It attracted 620 swimmers from across 38 clubs.
McMillan said Warrnambool's swimming facilities had changed dramatically since her formative years in the city under Ross Price's tutelage.
"The facilities here are fantastic and match anywhere in the state. They have put on a great show and made maximum use of the 50-metre facility.
"It's a bit different now to when I was swimming here. We didn't have the 25-metre indoor pool back then. All we had was the 19-metre indoor pool at Action.
"Each swimming association tries to build on things from their predecessors (for the country championships) and the Western District swimming association has done this on this occasion."
