Tarsha's sunny outlook after Moyneyana Swim win

05 Jan, 2010 09:38 AM
NOBODY was more shocked than Tarsha Umbers when the Warrnambool teenager scored a golden result in the 2010 Port Fairy Moyneyana Swim.

The 15-year-old clinched victory in the junior female category but her winning streak didn't end there.

She scored the fastest overall female time, completing the 1.2-kilometre swim in 17 minutes and 51 seconds - 18 seconds ahead of open female winner Sarah Harkin.

Tarsha, who will compete in the Victorian Age Championships in Melbourne tomorrow, was oblivious she was the first female across the line.

"I didn't know at all. The other group (open) started before us (juniors, masters, seniors and veterans)," Tarsha said.

"I just got my time. I didn't expect to be the fastest female at all."

Tarsha said the start of the race was tough. She said she wasn't the best runner and she entered the surf middle of the field. But once she hit the waves it was different.

"The water conditions were really good. I just got into my rhythm and swam out and started kicking.

"It wasn't too bad on the way back. There was a bit of a swell so we could do some body surfing."

The fastest time overall for the first race in the Shipwreck Coast Series belonged to Ryan Jennings, who clinched victory in 16 minutes and eight seconds.

Tarsha is not only dominant in the surf. She is equally at home in the pool.

"Pool or the open, I don't mind. I just love swimming," she said.

"I really love the open water though."

Her goal is to make the open water nationals in Nagambie next month. The Warrnambool and Port Campbell legs of the Shipwreck Coast Series will be held in coming weeks.

The youngster began competitively nine years ago.
