THAT starstruck feeling Matthew Logan thought he would experience at the 2009 Australian Shortcourse Championships wasn't quite there.
The Warrnambool 19-year-old took to the Hobart Aquatic Centre for the national titles on Saturday and yesterday.
"It was pretty amazing, just sitting around and seeing Leisel Jones walk past," he said. "I've had a lot of people ask what it's like to be around famous people but then I didn't think of them as that.
"They didn't seem famous because they were there to do the exact same thing as I was doing."
Logan was pleased with his first open national competition.
He competed in the 100-metre backstroke on Saturday before hitting the water for the 50m backstroke and 200m breaststroke yesterday.
He recorded half-second personal bests in all three events.
"I was very happy and it was good to get experience at that level," he said. "I wasn't nervous at all, which was surprising because I thought I would be."
The Warrnambool Swimming Club member finished 41st overall in the 100m backstroke, completing the swim in 59.26 seconds.
The fastest qualifier's time was 53.11.
He recorded 27.46 in the 50m backstroke (50th) and two minutes and 29.44 seconds in the 200m breaststroke (32nd).
The fastest qualifying times for the respective events were 24.19 and 2:10.25.
"I didn't expect too much and didn't set my sights too high," Logan said. "I just wanted to go there and get some experience.
"I'd like to go again.
"Maybe next time I'll qualify for a few more events."
Logan's next major competition isn't until January.
"I think it'll just be five months of hard training and then I'll see how I go at the start of the new year," he said.
