Jones excels: city swimmer in bronze medal haul

ISAAC Jones was Warrnambool's top performer at the 2010 Victorian Age Swimming Championships, claiming two bronze medals at the competition which finished on Sunday.

More than a thousand swimmers from 90 Victorian clubs took to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre pool for the five-day event.

Fourteen-year-old Jones achieved his two third placings in the 200-metre butterfly and 200m backstroke finals.

Fellow Warrnambool Swimming Club (WSC) members Dylan Lee and Jordan Logan bagged single bronze medals in their 100m backstroke finals, while Will Sheppard also swam third in the 100m butterfly.

Top-performing female swimmer Tanika Cameron made it to the 100m and 200m finals, but just missed out on a place in both races.

Club president Peter Logan said he was pleasantly surprised by the results of the 16 WSC members who participated in the event.

"This far exceeded our expectations," he said.

"Anyone who makes a final has to be swimming exceptionally well but to have five individuals make multiple finals is extra pleasing and a great reward for the kids' efforts."

Mr Logan said WSC coach Jayson Lamb propelled swimmers to personal best times and a high overall club ranking.

"Overall our club finished 14th out of all Victorian clubs, with the highlight being the boys finishing 10th," Mr Logan said. Eleven WSC swimmers finished with top-20 placings at the competition.

Swimmers have no time to rest as they prepare for the Victorian Country Championships to be held in Warrnambool from January 22.
