Isaac’s golden swims prove a perfect record

26 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
ISAAC Jones wowed the crowd at the Victorian Country Swimming Championships after a flawless meet in which he snared eight gold medals from eight events.

The Warrnambool Swimming Club (WSC) member was characteristically modest following the personal-best performance in Bendigo.

Isaac’s golden run consisted of the 100-metre and 200m butterfly; 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle; 100m and 200m backstroke; and 200m individual medley.

The talented 16-year-old said the heavy schedule was challenging.

“Heats were in the morning, then you have about three hours before you come back at night for the finals,” he said. “You have to try and conserve yourself in the heats and swim a bit slower.

“Then you have to try and swim a bit faster in the finals.”

He collected his eight titles after a busy lead-up which included competing at the Victorian Open Championships almost a fortnight ago.

“I’ve been doing a lot of races and a lot of events, just to get that race practice,” he said.

Isaac’s next focus is the Australian Championships in Adelaide in March, which double as selection trials for the 2012 London Olympics.

WSC president Peter Logan said the fact that Isaac could be dominant over a range of distances was remarkable.

Other strong performances at the titles came from Xavier Darcy (gold in 50m butterfly), Dylan Lee (eight finals, three medals), Brittney Berger (seven finals, two medals), Kayla Spicer (five finals, one medal), Melody Keath (four finals), Michael and Jack Paulka (six finals) and Matthew and Jordan Logan (eight finals).

Logan made special mention of Meg Flaherty, Fraser Harrison, Hannah Justin, Meaghan O’Leary and Tayte Lang, who represented the club in finals for the first time.

Warrnambool Swimming Club was able to match last year’s Victorian Country Swimming Championships result, recording an overall third finish at the three-day event behind Geelong and Traralgon.

“With 20 individual swimmers having final appearances and the club making 14 team relay finals, we are extremely happy with the results,” Logan said.
