 Good mates race the best

Good mates race the best

There's nothing like a bit of friendly rivalry to give you some extra kick.

When Warrnambool Swimming Club travelled to Shepparton on the weekend for the Victorian Country Shortcourse Championships.

The club's small team of 18 impressively finished third overall, with 15-year-olds Isaac Jones and Dylan Lee two swimmers who contributed to the top-three standing.

Warrnambool Swimming Club president Peter Logan said the duo often came up against each other.

"They're great mates and great swimming competitors," he said.

"Both of them make the other stronger."

Isaac was able to grab six gold medals (100m butterfly, 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle and 100m and 200m individual medley) and one bronze (200m butterfly) at the titles.

Dylan snapped up three silver (200m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100 individual medley).

Logan also highlighted outstanding performances from Xavier Darcy, Tanika Cameron, Jack Paulka and Tarsha Umbers.

Camperdown's Darcy, 21, claimed four gold (50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 200m individual medley) and a silver (50m freestyle) while Tanika, 14, earned gold in the 100m backstroke and bronze in the 200m backstroke.

Paulka, 21, finished with two bronze (100m butterfly and 200m backstroke) while Tarsha, 15, took out bronze in the 100m backstroke.

Logan said there were also encouraging performances from Jamin Baulch, Megan Flaherty, Laura Riordan, Meaghan O'Leary, Gabrielle Vallence and Laura Vallence.

The club recorded 38 top-10 finishes while it claimed 20 medals to rack up 545 points to come third overall.

"With a reduced team this was an unbelievable result," Logan said.

Warrnambool was behind powerhouse Traralgon (1560), which sent about 40 swimmers, and Geelong (703).

"From a rankings point of view, Traralgon has been the dominant country club for a long time," Logan said.

"They're head and shoulders above everyone else, so they're quality competition. For us to be equal or better than clubs like Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo means that we're doing the right things.

"We've got a healthy respect from other clubs."

Next for the Warrnambool club is the Victorian Age Shortcourse Championships in Melbourne from August 27-29.

Warrnambool's B2R Aquatic club took seven swimmers and finished 10th overall at the titles on the weekend with 266 points.
