ASHLEIGH Pettigrew is proof that when it comes to sport, it's not always about the shiny stuff.
The B2R Aquatic member has been selected in the Swimmer With a Disability Victorian development squad for the fourth time.
Pettigrew's mother Janet Attrill said her daughter's selection in the elite squad comes after promising performances at the state championships.
"She did personal bests in all her events and her best result was fifth (in the butterfly)," she said.
"She hasn't been able to secure a medal at state level but she's got bags of stuff locally."
Attrill said Pettigrew wasn't fazed whether or not she finished on the podium.
"She swims for enjoyment, she just loves it," she said.
"Her motivation is just to go out there and do better."
The 20-year-old's motivation and commitment to her chosen sport has been rewarded with selection in the state development squad.
"She trains six days a week from Monday to Saturday," Attrill said.
"She's started doing Wednesday mornings as well and I don't have any problems getting her up before 6am."
The keen swimmer told The Standard she was excited about gaining one of the seven spots in the development squad, which is a pathway to the national squad and provides her with specialist coaching.
"There's also workshops which cover how to look after yourself as an athlete," Attrill said.
Pettigrew said she was looking forward to meeting new people through the squad, with friendships one of the main reasons she has enjoyed swimming since taking it up six years ago.
Attrill praised the efforts of Pettigrew's coach at B2R, Chris Russell.
"He's just done a fantastic job," she said.
"B2R is a great, small family club."
