Schoolgirl sculler ends city's drought

25 Mar, 2009 04:00 AM
EMMANUEL College student Bernadette Meade has ended a five-year winning drought for Warrnambool rowers at Victoria's prestigious schoolgirls' regatta.

Bernadette, a year 11 student, won the open B single sculls final by about five lengths last weekend on the Barwon River, Geelong.

It capped an outstanding competition for Warrnambool rowers, with her younger sister Angela, of Emmanuel College, finishing second in the year nine single sculls final and Shaina Welsford, of Warrnambool College, fourth in the year 10 A final.

Bernadette and Angela are first year rowers, while Shaina reached the A final for the fourth year in succession.

The trio are members of Nestles Rowing Club junior program, coached by Kirsty Wright.

Club president Tom Bertrand said Megan Earls was the last Warrnambool rower to win at the schoolgirls' regatta, five years ago.

"It's the most prestigious event they can row at," Bertrand said. "There were 1920 girls entered.

"It's like the head of the river for the boys."

Bertrand said the girls trained five times a week in the competition build-up and had been competing at 2008-09 regattas since November.

Bernadette, Angela and Shaina were also successful at the Victorian Secondary School Sports Association rowing titles last Thursday in Geelong.

Angela and Bernadette were victorious on stationary rowing machines, as well as finishing second on the water. Shaina finished fourth in the A final of her event.

Emmanuel College student Joanne Mugavin won the open B final, while St John's Primary School pupil Joe Rivett finished third in the under 15 A final.

Emmanuel College student Aaron Skinner won the adaptive rowing final in the disability category, with placings for Chris Horsfall, of King's College, and George Kempton, of Emmanuel College.
