Monkey Puzzle's winning piece falls into place

23 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
THERE was a good reason why there were no celebrations for Peter Young and his crew when Monkey Puzzle finished the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race.

It’s because the team was unaware that they had won the performance division.

“We were fifth across the line but we were first on handicap,” skipper Young said.

“We thought we had a pretty good chance of winning and knew that we were in the running but we didn’t know for sure.

“I flew back to Adelaide to pick the truck up.

“I found out that we had won while I was driving back,” he said.

The feeling Macarthur’s Young experienced was a familiar one — he took out the same event last year.

“We were hoping to make it back-to-back but the chances weren’t great because there’s a lot of boats in the race,” he said.

“There were 50-something boats in our division.”

Monkey Puzzle, from the Port Fairy Yacht Club, finished the 156-nautical mile (almost 289 kilometres) race in one day, 13 seconds, 50 minutes and 23 seconds.

The next best yacht in the performance division was Kaesler from the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron, which finished in 01:15:28:57.

“There were breezes for most of the race so it was relatively slow,” Young recalled.

“But we never ran out of breeze completely.

“We just gradually got to a good position. This win was a bit more satisfying than the first one last year because we sailed a better race and we didn’t make any errors.”

Young’s crew included Hugh Parker, Colin Goodall, Steve Grenfell, Ron Guyett, Jonathan Klestadt and Kevin O’Brien.

“We had a crew of six last year,” he said.

“Five were back this year and then we had two new ones.”

The Adelaide to Port Lincoln, which started Friday, is South Australia’s premier ocean race.

“This is the main race of the year for us,” Young said.

“We’re racing in a regatta over here now until Thursday.”

Monkey Puzzle is a home-designed and home-built yacht.

“It took 18 months to build,” Young recalled.

“We finished it three years ago.

“All the crew helped build it.

“It does give you a bit more satisfaction,” he said.
