Lottery draw for teams adds to thrills

14 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
THE team had never played together before but it didn't take long for high-fives to be handed out.

Warrnambool and District Indoor Bias Bowls Association (WDIBBA) held its fours championship on Saturday, with a combination skippered by Maureen Drennan triumphing in the ladies' event.

Her team of Patsy Neal (third), Yvonne Lenehan (second) and Lauris Blackmore (lead) was decided randomly before the title.

"Lauris is from Port Fairy, Yvonne and I are at the same club but don't play together and Patsy is from Dennington," Drennan said.

The side's unfamiliarity was not an issue as they claimed the championship after finishing with two wins and six shots up.

"We played consistently well," Drennan said.

"There were a few high fives going on.

"It was a good atmosphere."

Drennan, a former national representative, enjoyed the association's new format of randomly-drawn teams.

"The expectation is for the experienced players to help out the less experienced players," she said.

"It was basically the experienced players who came up with the idea.

"We're enjoying helping when we can and giving a few tips along the way."

Second in the ladies was a combination skippered by Joan Owen, which finished with two wins and two shots up.

John Hovard (skipper), Vince Lenehan (third), Les Lenehan (second) and Kevin King (lead) claimed the men's championship, finishing with three wins and 11 shots up.

The battle for runner-up was extremely tight, with Graham Firth's and Max Dalton's teams both finishing with one win, one draw and one loss.

Both combinations finished eight shots up, effectively ensuring second place came down to percentage.

Firth's side edged out Dalton's side by only .19 per cent.

Meanwhile, two WDIBBA men's teams - skippered by Shane Cashill and Rodney Wilson - advanced to the semi-finals at the state fours championships in Melbourne on Sunday.

A ladies' side, skippered by Drennan, also competed and was eliminated in the second round.

The association will send two teams to the state triples championships this weekend.
