THE sea may have been flat but Warrnambool made waves at the Victorian Masters surf competition at Lorne.
The city's surf boat team was stripped of its gold medal it won in the 120s age group class on Saturday after rival club Jan Juc disputed the victory.
A technicality on the club's entry form disqualified it from the race. Crew member John McNeil admitted the loss was disappointing.
But he accepted the officials' decision and said the crew was able to move on from the disqualification.
It took out the A reserve surf boat race on Sunday.
"That was a sweetener," McNeil said.
"We were feeling a little bit flat after Saturday, but Sunday was a really good day for us. It was a little bit choppy and a good swell and we won easily.
"It suited Warrnambool's style of racing."
The A reserve victory was not the only win for Warrnambool in the surf boats.
With Port Fairy's girls' team and Port Campbell's masters' crew, it won the district relay.
"Theoretically we did pretty well. We won our age group, open and the relay," McNeil said.
"It is great preparation for the Australian Whale Boat Racing Championships in Warrnambool this weekend."
Port Fairy also claimed silver in the 160s age group class on Saturday. Crew member Scott Hetherington said the conditions were perfect, with about a 60-centimetre swell.
"It was nice and flat, great for rowing conditions."
It finished about two boat lengths behind the winner. Hetherington said it was a strong field.
"There really wasn't that much between second and third."
Port Campbell rebounded after a disappointing effort at the national championships held in Wollongong a week earlier.
The sea was too rough in New South Wales for the team to finish. But on Saturday, Port Campbell's masters' crew claimed bronze in the 180s age group class.
Warrnambool team members were: Gary Askew, Stuart Titmus, Toby Pettigrew and John McNeil.
Port Fairy's crew comprised Bob Beekhof, Dean Dwyer, Howard Sharp, Greg Dalton and Scott Hetherington. Meanwhile Paul Younis, Peter Finch, Peter Cashmore, Simon Trotter and Shane Maslin made up the Port Campbell team.
