THE country eclipsed the city on Saturday night in fights which saw regional boxers match it with metropolitan contenders.
Coleraine boxing coach Ray McIntosh said the event, the Country Versus City Bouts, was a huge success.
It involved four south-west boxers teaming up with Mount Gambier boxers to take on a group from Adelaide at Mount Gambier's Blue Lake Sports Park.
``We always have to travel to Melbourne for bouts so going to Mt Gambier was a nice change,'' McIntosh said.
``It was good to come up against different boxers.''
Lyndon Edney, in the light-heavyweight division and Donald Jones, in the lightweight, enjoyed unanimous wins in their exhibition bouts while Rohan Eccles was unlucky not to taste success.
``He came last on points but he was fighting South Australia's lightweight champion so I was more than happy with his efforts,'' McIntosh said.
Warrnambool's Tom Boyle, trained by Steve Andrews, was able to come away with a victory in his first-ever bout.
``He was in the super-welterweight division,'' Andrews said.
``He won by a unanimous decision over four rounds.
``It was better than expected seeing as it was his first fight.
``He actually fought like he'd been in five or six.'' McIntosh said the event, the first one held in about 20 years, would most likely become an annual one.
``It was very successful,'' he said. ``And the country ended up beating the city, which was good.''
