IF you think squash is only for snappy springy players like 14-year-old Bernard Schiffl, it's time to meet Peter Flett.
At 59, he readily admits he doesn't have the zip he possessed when he took up the sport 35 years ago.
"I have to say my style of play has changed over the years," he said.
"I can't go as hard as I did.
"When I play the younger ones, I have to outsmart them."
Flett's wits are obviously still in tact as he is still competitive when he takes on players like Bernard.
"I need to keep beating him at every opportunity I get because I'm not going to be able to do it for much longer," he laughed.
The pair are preparing for Action Squash Club's new season from next week.
Flett, who moved from Mount Gambier to Warrnambool about 17 years ago, conceded he was slightly surprised he was still able to hit the court.
"A lot of people can't play as they get older because their body breaks down but fortunately mine's held up," he said.
"As long as I'm physically able to, I'll keep playing."
Bernard started squash seven years ago thanks to the influence of his sister.
Since then he has represented Victoria.
"In 2008 I was the under 13 No. 2," he said.
"I went to Perth to play in the Australian Junior Championships.
"I think I got seventh over there, which I was pretty happy with."
While the teenager travels to Melbourne once a month for training and a tournament, he practices twice a week in Warrnambool.
Bernard, who is aiming for state selection this year, plays once a week in Warrnambool.
"There's a couple of people from Timboon who are around 16 but it's mostly against adults," he said.
"You just have to analyse their game and then try and use it against them.
"It's such a good sport for fitness."
Action Squash Club president Jason Bilson said anyone interested in taking up the sport should attend a grading session tonight.
"Squash is basically for all ages, as you can see," he said.
Tonight's grading is from 7pm .
