Aerobic assault: World titles await Andreoli

25 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
HE's been there before but that hasn't helped the butterflies from zipping about in Brenton Andreoli's stomach.

Tomorrow the Emmanuel College student will jet off to the FISAF World Fitness Championships in Martinique.

"I'm pretty nervous at the moment," he said yesterday. "It's going to be the first time I compete in singles."

It's the second successive year he has represented Australia in aerobics after attending the world titles in Russia in 2008, when he earned a bronze medal in mixed pairs with Jan Juc's Emily Daniels.

The duo will take to the stage again at the 2009 titles.

"We placed third last year so we're aiming to beat that," Brenton said. "Gold would be nice."

The Naringal teenager has done everything in his power to prepare for the top of the podium.

He has travelled to Geelong twice a week for strenuous training sessions, along with doing individual gym work.

"I do a lot of cardio work and work on my core a lot," he said. "(In Geelong) we do about three full routines.

"We get about three minutes break between them.

"It's hard enough doing one. On Saturday we did it four times our coach nearly had us vomiting."

While it sounds harsh, Brenton appreciates the training methods of Justine Bratanavicius, the coach of Aerosport Allstars.

He conceded he barely gets feedback from her.

"She hasn't said too many positive things leading up to the worlds but if she does, we know we've done something pretty well," he said.

The year 10 student believes he is at the peak of his fitness.

Endurance will be important tomorrow, when he flies to Los Angeles.

"We leave at 10 o'clock but we land in LA before we take off that day, at 7 o'clock in the morning," he said.

"I'll have to sleep on that plane then try and stay awake to get into the time zone."

From LA he goes to Miami, Puerto Rico and then to the Caribbean.

He carries stellar form heading into the titles after taking out first in singles and pairs at the national titles in September.

“I haven’t done a stage performance since August and September but my training ones have been of a very high standard,” he said.

“And once I get up on stage it will be even better because of the adrenalin.”

Brenton will compete next Tuesday and Wednesday, aiming to progress from the preliminaries to the semi-finals and finals.

He will stay overseas once the championships are over for a holiday with his parents, which includes a visit to Disney World in Orlando.

He praised his parents for taking him to training in Geelong and funding his world titles campaign.
