State honour for teen netball umpire

25 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
SHE may be touring across Europe on a well earned break, but that failed to stop Amelia Smith winning a State Government award.

The 18-year-old Warrnambool and District league umpire was one of two south-west recipients for the Government's 2009 sport and recreation awards.

While the Terang teen was touring through the Czech Republic her mother Kerrie collected the gong at a MCG ceremony.

Smith said her daughter was "thrilled to bits" to receive the Young Person in Sport award.

"I talked to her on the mobile phone afterwards and she was pretty stoked, very excited," Smith said.

Amelia has been involved in netball since she was seven.

Sport and Recreation Minister James Merlino said Amelia displayed maturity beyond her years.

"Amelia has excelled on and off the court taking up a range of roles including being a mentor for junior umpires, a netball administrator, and grade secretary since the age of 12," Mr Merlino said.

Warrnambool rower Tom Bertrand received the Access for All award. He's coached two rowers with intellectual disabilities to the national titles and introduced Paralympics silver medallist Kathryn Ross to the sport.

Karate black belt Sonia Morey, 15, of Nirranda, was a finalist in the Young Person in Sport award.

South West Sports Assembly executive officer and Warrnambool mayor Michael Neoh congratulated the recipients.

"It is a huge achievement for Warrnambool to have two award winners and a finalist. There were eight awards and that was for the whole of the state," Neoh said.

"They should all be very proud".
