PORT Fairy can thank former key forward Frank Matthews for recruiting league under 15 best and fairest winner Sarah Moroney.
Sarah, who polled 38 votes, was a runaway winner in last night's count, winning from Terang Mortlake's versatile Joanna Couch, who picked up 23 votes.
Sarah, who started playing with the Seagulls four years ago, revealed she only joined Port Fairy after travelling with her family from their home at Hawkesdale to watch Matthews, her uncle, play with Port Fairy.
"We went and watched a few matches and stayed," she said.
Sarah thanked her mum Loretta, father Mick and older sister Rebekah, on L plates, for ferrying her to training and matches.
The goal defence said she had no idea she was a chance in last night's award.
"I thought I would go alright but not this well," Sarah said.
She set up her win early, polling five best on court performances in the first seven rounds and completed the count with three three-votes in the last four rounds, including the last match of the season.
Sarah paid tribute to her coach Bev Bourke and Seagulls veteran Nicole Dwyer, who has helped steer the side from the sidelines.
She said they had given her a simple task.
"Just try my hardest," she said of their advice.
"And just play your own game and enjoy yourself."
She said fun had a lot to do with her success, playing alongside many of her Emmanuel College friends.
Sarah and Joanna may have shared the spoils last night, but on Saturday they will be pitted against each other in the qualifying final at Mortlake's D.C Farran Oval.
"It's going to be a really game," Sarah said.
"We beat them the first time we played them but they won the second time."
