HAMPDEN league crumbled on the court last night while Colac and District Football Netball League cruised to victory, in the second round of Western Regional State League.
The Under 17 Bottle Green’s lack of discipline lead to the 49-39 smashing at the hands of the travelling side.
Hampden coach Kate Lindsey said “basic errors” let her side down.
“It was just the little things,” she said
“Our passes were shocking, we struggled to bring the ball down and our shooting percentage was down.”
It was an even tussle in the opening quarter as both sides warmed into the match.
Scores were level at the first change, 11-all, before Colac and District accelerated.
Despite the best efforts of Hampden centre Kate Nelson and defender Hayley O’ Grady, Colac’s perfect shooting accuracy pushed the side ahead 23-19 at the main break.
“Their shooters didn’t miss a goal,” Lindsey said.
“We got a run on, but they just kept coming back.”
Lindsey shuffled positions in the third quarter in a bid to regain control, but it was too little too late.
“We changed a few positions and we were playing much better, but they were just to quick,” she conceded.
“We were playing catch-up the whole time.”
Tall shooter Eliza Dwyer steadied in the Hampden circle but the Colac and District defensive combination of Madalyn Bartlett (GK) and Sinead Ryan (GD) made any attempt at the post near impossible.
Hampden trailed 35-26 as it entered the last term and continued to lack rhythm until the final whistle.
“They just let themselves down,” Lindsey said.
“They are a much better side than what they are showing on the court.
“They’re just not gelling as a team yet, which isn’t a good sign this far into the competition.”
Lindsey said the Bottle Greens were in for a tough training session this week.
She said the side would concentrate on passing and driving towards the ball.
“Finalising our positions is also the key,” she said.
“Once we do that hopefully we can get more structured and settled.”
In the open division Colac Football Netball Club beat Colac and District league, 60-45.
